Food Label Design Rules: The Basics

Creating a food label design can be tricky. When designing food labels, it’s important to include information about the product that appeals to the consumer. In order to be effective, food labels must look attractive and appealing, but they must also reassure the customer that the product is safe. Different types of food require different styles of labeling. For example, meat and poultry labels should convey that the product is fresh and unspoiled, while canned food labels should advertise that the product is high quality and durable.

Tips for Effective Food Label Design

Certain products can benefit from some label design guidelines:

  •      Colors are a great way to make labels more attractive, but some color schemes should be reserved for certain foods
  •      Green colors should never be used on meat product labels. The color green can remind some customers of mold. This can make a delicious, fresh product seem unappealing or unsafe.
  •      Yellow is also used as a cautionary color (like in traffic lights) so using this color on a label that can easily spoil doesn’t convey safety, which is important when choosing fresh foods.
  •      Using complementary colors, like red and blue, can draw the customer’s eye to your product
  •      Simple, clean designs that aren’t too busy will keep customers focused on the product and make purchase easier
  •      Let the label match the food! For example, bright colors and bold fonts are great for candy or snack labels, while green colors and delicate fonts work well with produce.
  •      Don’t overthink it. Labels that try to squeeze in too much information or that have busy color schemes can be distracting and unnerving to the eye.
  •      Describe the product. “Whole pineapple chunks in simple syrup” gives the customer more information than “pineapple,” allowing them to make an informed choice.

How Can Design Help my Business?

Studies have shown that one of the most important factors in consumer behavior is packaging. Customers regularly choose food products based on how appealing the design of the packaging is. Labels are especially important for food because taste is important when picking food. If it doesn’t look good to the customer, they probably won’t think it will taste good! If you create a product that is satisfying and tasty, with an attractive label to match, you have just drawn in potential life-long customers.
