How to Create a Vintage Feel with Your Label Designs

From candles and wine bottles to food and clothing, everyone likes the vintage look. It evokes memories of a simpler time when the market wasn’t as saturated and there were just a few tried-and-true companies putting out quality products. That being said, going for a vintage appeal in your label designs is a wonderful choice for many different products and one that is quite easy to do!

Tips for Vintage Label Designs

  • Pick your colors. Depending on your product, you may want to evoke anything from a soft and feminine quality to an old-school industrial look. Think about using muted colors – no pastels or neons here!
  • Keep it simple. In today’s day and age we’re bombarded with logos, ads, and messages everywhere we look. Back in the day, people kept things simple. Think about a simple graphic or logo, to-the-point messaging, and a clean design.
  • Mind your font. Writing slogans or taglines on your product? You can choose from a number of older fonts that were around back in the day of no internet.
  • Keep your messaging wholesome. People were a lot less liberal in the past, so keep the message clear and clean-cut, eliminating profane or suggestive statements.
  • Choose photographs that evoke another time. If you are adding pictures to your labels, choose pictures that depict the classic American dream… men and their cars, women in the house, children playing outside.

If you’re going for vintage label designs, make sure the look and style matches the product you are trying to sell. For example, it wouldn’t make any sense to put a vintage product label on a brand new vacuum cleaner with all the bells and whistles. Going past the obvious, make sure to know your market and make sure that this style will appeal to them.

There are a few simple ways you can get this information. Start by getting to know your customers. It’s never a bad idea to ask questions, the more information you can get, the better! Market research can be done by conducting polls, asking questions directly to your customers when you get the chance to be in person with them, or you can even try out a couple of different label samples and see which one works best!

Creating a Vintage label

Creating a vintage label is a lot of fun, and when done right it can be just the edge your product needs to fly off the shelf! Vintage is a very appealing design to many people and can help them feel like they already know your product before they have even tried it.
